Hang a Heart for Valentine's Day

Make "stained glass" heart decorations to hang in a window or give away on Valentine's Day.

  • Ready-to-bake roll of sugar cookie dough
  • Wax paper
  • String
  • Red Lifesavers┬« candy
  • Small plastic bag
  • Wooden spoon

  • 1. Preheat oven to 350 F (177 C).
    2. Cut a half-inch (one-centimeter) slice from the roll of cookie dough.
    3. On wax paper, roll the dough into a long, thin rounded strip about the width of a pencil. See the illustration.
    4. Shape the dough into the outline of a wide heart on an ungreased, foil-covered baking sheet. Join the ends by pressing them together. Repeat the process until you have made the number of hearts you want.
    5. Tie a loop of string onto the heart for hanging. See the illustration.
    6. Bake for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, put pieces of candy into a plastic bag and crush them by whacking with a wooden spoon. (You will need about 6 pieces for each heart.) See the illustration.
    7. Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Fill the heart centers with crushed candy.
    8. Return the baking sheet to the oven and bake for 4 minutes.
    9. Allow the "stained glass" hearts to cool completely before removing from the baking sheet. You will then have your sweet hearts ready to hang.
