Shafqat Hussain is a conservationist who wanted to protect snow leopards, but also knew that local herders were trying to protect their livestock from these predators.
His creative solution was to form Project Snow Leopard, which pays herders if an animal in their flock is killed by a snow leopard. This insurance system requires herders to pay a small amount of money for each animal they own. This helps the economy and stops people from killing the endangered cats.
"You cannot expect people who are struggling to survive to subsidize a species for purely environmental reasons," Hussain says. "Conservation should not come at the expense of poor farmers.”
