Sponsor is NGHT, LLC d/b/a National Geographic Digital Media - Kids, 1145 17th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036-4688 (“Sponsor” or “NGDM”).
The DogEared Blogger Contest begins October 1 and ends November 15, 2010. Entries must be postmarked by November 15, 2010 and received by November 23, 2010. Entries become the property of Sponsor and will not be returned or acknowledged. The Contest consists of the phases below, as further described in these Official Rules.

WHO MAY ENTER
Contest is open only to legal residents of the United States (excluding residents of Puerto Rico) who are nine to fourteen (9–14) years of age as of October 1, 2010. Employees of Sponsor and its affiliates and subsidiaries, and their immediate family members (spouse, parent, child, sibling and their respective spouses, regardless of where they live) or persons living in the same households of such individuals, whether or not related, are not eligible to enter or win a prize. Entrants must have a parent's or legal guardian's permission to enter. By their signature, parents/legal guardians consent to their child’s participation and agree to these Official Rules. CONTEST IS VOID IN PUERTO RICO AND WHERE PROHIBITED.
HOW TO ENTER
To enter, you may either (1) download an entry form and complete the form with your name, address, telephone number, e-mail address (if available), date of birth and parent’s or legal guardian’s signature; or (2) fill out a 3”x5” note card with your name, address, telephone number, e-mail address (if available), date of birth, and parent’s or legal guardian’s signature. Mail your completed entry form or 3”x5” card and Book Review (described below) to: DogEared Blogger Contest, National Geographic Digital Media Kids, 1145 17th St., NW, Washington, DC 20036. Entry form must be complete for entry to be valid.
Entry must comply with the following requirements (“Entry Requirements”):
Read a children’s chapter book that is a work of fiction (your “Book”). Write a book review of your Book, consisting of no more than 250 words (“Book Review”). The Book must be a work of fiction that contains chapters, not poems. The Book Review must be in English.
The Book Review must be a single work of original material created by the contest entrant. By entering the Contest, entrant represents, acknowledges and warrants that the submitted Book Review is an original work created solely by the entrant and that no other party has any right, title, claim or interest in the Book Review.
Modifying, enhancing or altering a third party’s pre-existing work does not qualify as entrant’s original creation.
Obscene, provocative, or otherwise objectionable content will not be considered, and such determination is solely at the discretion of Sponsor.
- The entries will be judged in accordance with the Judging Criteria, as defined below.
- Limit one entry per person.
THE POTENTIAL WINNERS (AND PARENTS OR LEGAL GUARDIANS) ARE REQUIRED TO EXECUTE THE FOLLOWING: (1) AN AFFIDAVIT OF ELIGIBILITY AND LIABILITY RELEASE; (2) WARRANTY OF OWNERSHIP AND LICENSE; AND (3) PUBLICITY RELEASE. UNLESS PROHIBITED BY LAW, THE POTENTIAL WINNER (AND PARENT OR LEGAL GUARDIAN) MUST SIGN THESE DOCUMENTS NO LATER THAN 15 DAYS FROM THE DATE OF PRIZE NOTIFICATION IN ORDER FOR SPONSOR TO AWARD THE PRIZE. NONCOMPLIANCE OR RETURN OF PRIZE NOTIFICATION AS UNDELIVERABLE MAY RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION AND, AT SPONSOR’S DISCRETION, SELECTION OF AN ALTERNATE WINNER.
Three (3) Prize Winners will be selected. Each Prize consists of ( 1) a three month "assignment" to blog about books on National Geographic Kids online book blog, DogEared. The winners' first names will appear on the blog, and an illustration of each Winner’s likeness and a short bio will be published on the "Meet Our Bloggers" page (Winner is responsible for providing a photograph of him/herself for use in creating the illustration). (2) A $100.00 gift card to a nationally known book retailer and (3) A copy of the National Geographic Kids Almanac 2011 book. Approximate Retail Value ("ARV") of the Prize is $112.99. The seven (7) remaining finalists will receive a copy of the National Geographic Weird But True! 2 book. Approximate Retail Value ("ARV") of the Prize is $6.95. All prize details are at Sponsor’s sole discretion.
- No prize transfer, assignment or substitution by Winners permitted. Sponsor reserves the right to substitute any prize, in which case a prize of comparable value, determined in Sponsor’s reasonable discretion, will be awarded.
- Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received and skill of the entrant.
Contest consists of two (2) rounds of evaluation.
Judging Phase. In round one, National Geographic Kids editorial staff (the “Judges”) will evaluate the entries based on the following criteria (“Judging Criteria”)
1) Extent to which the Book Review demonstrates genuine creativity and a clear, well thought out opinion. (70%)
2) Extent to which the Book Review is grammatically correct, easy to comprehend, and interesting to children aged 6-14. (30%)
The Judges will select ten (10) Finalists based on the Judging Criteria. Finalists will be notified on or around November 30, 2010 and each will be deemed a Finalist subject to verification of eligibility and execution of an Affidavit of Eligibility, License and Liability Release.
Voting Phase. During the Voting Phase, the ten (10) Finalist entries will be posted at http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids/contests/dogeared-blogger-contest-2010. The public will be invited to vote for the best entry. Limit: Each participant may vote for only one (1) entry per day during the Voting Phase. The three (3) Finalist entries that receive the highest number of valid votes during the Voting Phase, as determined by Sponsor, will be the potential Prize winners.
In case of a tie, the Sponsor, in its sole discretion, will select the potential winner from the tied Entries based on the Judges’ analysis of the entries using the Judging Criteria.
For the Voting Phase: Voters must be legal U.S. residents. Multiple voters are not permitted to share the same email address. Any attempt by any voter to submit more than the stated number of votes by using multiple/different email addresses, identities or any other method will void all of that voter’s votes in the Contest and he/she will be disqualified from further participation in the Contest. Use of any automated system to vote is prohibited and will result in disqualification. Sponsor is not responsible for lost, late, incomplete, invalid, unintelligible or misdirected votes, which will be disqualified. In the event of a dispute as to the identity of any vote, the authorized account holder of the email address used to vote will be deemed to be the voter. The "authorized account holder" is the natural person assigned the email address by an Internet access provider, online service provider or other organization responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with the submitted address. If Sponsor determines, in its sole discretion, that a Finalist is in collusion with any voter who submits or attempts to submit an invalid vote, the Finalist will be disqualified.
- Decisions of the Sponsor and Judges are final and binding.
- Sponsor reserves the right not to award all prizes in the event an insufficient number of eligible entries meeting the minimum judging criteria are received, as determined by Sponsor and Judges in their sole discretion.
Winning entries, and the winners' name, voice, and likeness may be published by Sponsor, its designees, licensees or affiliates, on Sponsor's website, and/or in press releases associated with the DogEared book blog. By participating, all entrants grant a worldwide, perpetual, royalty-free license to NGDM and its licensees and designees (the "Authorized Parties"), and acknowledge that the Authorized Parties may use the winning Book Review and subsequent blog posts in DogEared Book Blog, along with a name credit, in any media now or hereafter known, without restriction, including commercially using it to fullest extent possible. No Authorized Party will be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such use.
LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
By participating, entrants (and their parents or legal guardians) agree to release, discharge and hold harmless NGDM, and its parent, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising agencies, agents and their employees, officers, directors, and representatives from any claims, losses, and damages arising out of their participation in this Contest or any Contest-related activities and the acceptance and use, misuse, or possession of any prize awarded hereunder.
THIS CONTEST IS VOID IN PUERTO RICO AND WHERE PROHIBITED. This Contest is subject to federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Certain restrictions may apply. Sponsor is not responsible for late, lost, stolen, mutilated, incomplete, illegible, misdirected, or postage-due mail. Entries void if the Sponsor determines the entry to not be an original, or if the entries are illegible, incomplete, damaged, irregular, altered, counterfeit, produced in error or obtained through fraud or theft.
Participants also agree (a) to be bound by these Official Rules; (b) that the decisions of the Judges are final on all matters relating to the Contest.. All federal, state and local taxes, fees and surcharges on prizes are the sole responsibility of the prize winners. In the event that the selected winner(s) of any prize are/is ineligible or refuses the prize, the prize will be forfeited and Sponsor, in its sole discretion, may choose whether to award the prize to another winner.
Winners’ first names and states of residence will be available online at http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids/contests/dogeared-blogger-contest-2010 after December 15, 2010, or send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: DogEared Blogger Contest Winner: NGDM Kids, 1145 17th St., NW, Washington, DC 20036, attn: NGDM - Kids (Residents of Vermont need not include postage.)
NOTICE TO INDIVIDUALS: REMOVAL FROM MAILING LIST: Any individual (or other duly authorized person) may elect to exclude the name and address of that individual from all lists used by Sponsor to mail skill contests or sweepstakes. To elect to have an individual's name excluded from all such lists, submit a removal request in writing to: DogEared Blogger Contest, NGDM Kids, 1145 17th St., NW, Washington, DC 20036, attn: Marketing Department. This notification system may be used to prohibit mailing of all skill contests or sweepstakes by Sponsor to such individual.
