Kheer is a tasty treat traditionally served during Diwali.

Kheer is an easy traditional sweet made from rice, milk, and dried fruits and nuts. This delicious treat is a favorite of the people in South Asia and is often served during Diwali, the festival of lights.


  • 1/4 cup medium or long grain white rice
  • 4 cups whole milk (or 2 cups milk and 2 cups half and half)
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • Raisins, almonds, pistachios, and cashews to taste
  • Pinch of saffron thread


Heat the milk, rice, and cardamom over medium heat. Bring to a boil and then simmer gently for about 20 minutes until the rice is soft. Add a few crushed nuts, raisins, and saffron thread. Simmer for 4 minutes, then add the sugar and stir. Remove from the stove and serve warm or chill in the refrigerator and serve cold.
