Keli
Keli is a 14-year-old girl who lives in Guatemala. She lives in a small village in the highlands, which is a mountainous area in the northwest of Guatemala. Everyone in her town wears the traditional clothing, traje, that they have worn for centuries. The ladies weave the fabrics and the men, los hombres, sew the clothing. Men and boys wear red pants, a button up shirt with a woven collar, and a straw hat.
Girls and ladies wear the traditional woven shirt and a dark blue wrap skirt with a long woven belt.
Quick Q&A
What language do you speak? I speak an indigenous language called Mam and Spanish. Spanish is the official language and I am learning Spanish in school.
How many brothers and sisters do you have? I have one adopted sister, Luisa Caramina. We also call her Slack, which means baby in Mam. But now that she is six, she doesn't like us to call her that!
Here is a picture of me, Caramina (she is holding our cat), my Grandma, (she was not feeling very well in this picture), and my mom!
Do you have any pets? We have a cat named Lawrencito.
What do you do for fun? I hang out with my girl friends--not boys! But we do like to watch what the boys are doing. I like to play basketball, listen to rock music, reggaeton, and latin music.
What is your favorite movie? Shrek
What is your favorite TV show? I like to watch soap operas!
What is your favorite music or band? Latin and reggaeton, but I also like Shakira.
