Canada and the Winter Olympics 2010

Canada is a massive country, rich in culture and natural resources. Vancouver, British Columbia, is the host for the winter Olympic games in 2010. Over the course of several weeks, we'll have Olympic updates from three kids in Canada. Rachel lives in Vancouver and will attend a couple of events; Sima lives in Montreal and is so excited that Canada is hosting the world's athletes; and Jack, who lives in Washington, D.C. but is going to Vancouver to enjoy the games, will share his view of the games with us.

How many brothers and sisters do you have?
I have 2 younger brothers--Tyler (8 years old) and Gavin (6 years old).

What's the coolest part about living in Vancouver? The coolest part about living in Vancouver is that it is a seaside city and it is surrounded by beautiful mountains--you could go to the beach and to the mountains all in one day!  I think this makes Vancouver really unique.

Have you lived in Vancouver your whole life? Yes.

What do kids like to do in Vancouver?  When friends come to visit, what is the coolest thing to show them in Vancouver? Kids enjoy being outdoors because there are lots of great parks and beaches--you can cycle, play sports and just explore. I think the coolest places to take visiting friends are the Vancouver Aquarium and Granville Island.

Do you have any pets? No, but I used to have a fish called "Aqua".

What do you like to do in your free time? I love to draw, read, and hang out with my friends.  When I get together with my friends, one of our favourite things to do is to make short funny films with my Flip Video.

Do you play sports? Yes, I play volleyball, basketball, and I figure skate and golf.

What's your favorite?
My favorite is figure skating.

Do you like school? Absolutely!

What's it like? I love my school because our teachers are great and we have lots of sports, arts and community-service programs.

What's your favorite subject? I like Art and P.E.

Do you play video games? What are your favorites? Sometimes I play--my favorites are Mario Kart and Band Hero.

What is a typical day like for you?
I wake up early and get ready for school. School is very busy and lots of fun. After school I usually figure skate or I have an after-school sports game. Then I do my homework if I have any, then it is dinner time and off to bed!

What's your favorite food? Spaghetti and sushi!!!

What's your favorite Olympic event?
I have a few favourites--Figure Skating, Skeleton, and Snowboarding.

Who is your favorite athlete who will compete in the Winter Olympics?
Roberto Luongo (hockey)--he is the goalie for the Vancouver Canucks   He is goaltending for the Canadian Hockey Team.

Do you have any brothers or sisters?
I have zero brothers or sisters.

What's the coolest part about living in Montreal? In Montreal, I can do whatever I like to do, because everything is close. For example, I can go shopping, swim at the beach, and cross country skiing without leaving the island.

Have you lived in Montreal your whole life? Yes, I was born in Montreal.

What do kids like to do in Montreal?  When friends come to visit, what is the coolest thing to show them in Montreal? Summer in Montreal there are plenty of music festivals, fireworks, and of course La Ronde our great amusement park. The rest of the year I can show them downtown, because it is the heart of Montreal

Do you have any pets? Yes, I have three cats: Pompon, Grisou, and Rosy.

What do you like to do in your free time? I love to listen to music, chat with my friends on the computer, read books, watch TV, and go play outside.

Do you play sports? Yes I play sports. Fencing, bicycle, and swimming.

What's your favorite? My favorite sport is fencing. It is four years that I practice it.

What is your favorite kind of music? I like Punk/Rock music. My favorite band is sum41--they are Canadians!

Do you like school? I like certain subjects at school. But I prefer to spend time with my friends.

What's it like? I am in first grade high school. I have four periods per day, but my weekend is Saturday and Sunday.

What are your favorite subjects?
I have several favorite subjects: music, science, history, and géography.

Do you play video games? What are your favorites?
Yes I love video games. My console is Wii and my favorite video game is Prince of Persia.

What is a typical day like for you? Monday to Friday, I wake up 7:00 am and I go to school. I return home at 4:00 pm, do my homework and then chat with my friends and watch TV. But Saturday and Sunday I relax.

What's your favorite food? My favorite food is Italian food.

Are you excited that Canada is hosting the Olympics? Yes I am thrilled about it.

What is your favorite Olympic event? My favorite Olympic event is the bobsleigh.

Who is your favorite athlete who will compete in the Winter Olympics?
My favorite athlete is Kim Saint-Pierre, goaltender for the women's Hockey team.

How old are you? I am ten years old.

How many brothers and sisters do you have? I have one older sister in high school.

What are you looking forward to most at the Olympics in Vancouver? I'm most looking forward to the ski jumping.  It looks like they are flying!

Where do you live?
I live in Maryland, close to Washington, DC.

Do you do any winter sports? Ski, ice hockey, etc? I went skiing for the first time this winter.  I thought it was really fun and easy. I also really like to go sledding and snow-tubing.

Do you have any pets? Yes, I have two golden retrievers (Annie and Hero), a guinea pig (Nibbles) and a sister (just kidding).

What do you like to do in your free time? I like to play video games, read books, go sledding in the winter, and have play-dates with my friends. I'm also a Boy Scout and I like to go hiking and camping and learn things to earn badges.

Do you play other sports? Yes, I play soccer in the fall and spring. I also played indoor soccer this winter.

Which Olympic sport would you want to try? I would like to try bobsled because you go faster than regular sledding. My cousin Josh trained for bobsled with the U.S. team a long time ago..

Do you like school? Yes

What's your favorite subject? I like math and science.

Do you play video games? What are your favorites? Yes, I play World of Warcraft.  I also play XBox with my friends when they come over for playdates.

What is a typical day like for you? I get up at 6am and have breakfast with my family.  Then I play video games until 7:15 when I catch the bus to take a math class at the middle school. Then I take another bus to get to my elementary school where I take the rest of my classes.  At recess, I play my friends and I play a game where we pretend we are characters in a game and I control how the game is played--I am the game-master--it's kind hard to explain.  After school, I go to daycare, do my homework, and play more with my friends.  My dad picks me up at 5:17 and we go home and walk the dogs with the family. Then we play video games until dinner, eat dinner, then I practice piano, and watch TV with the family. Before I go to bed I read every night.  If it is Friday, I have soccer practice after school and Saturdays we have games.

What's your favorite food? I love sushi.

Who is your favorite athlete who will compete in the Winter Olympics? My favorite athlete is Lindsey Vonn--she is a really good skiier.

What kind of music do you like?
I like Green Day and electronic music.  I also am learning how to play the piano.

What is your favorite book?
The Chronicles of Amber, by Roger Zelasny because it is really exciting. I just finished the first book in the series.
