Hi everyone. We're still in Costa Rica and having a great time. After Monteverde we went to the Arenal Volcano, which is an active volcano that is still letting out lava. When we arrived, great clouds of smoke were coming from the top of it, which was amazing to see. Later that day we went on a hike up the old lava flow, which was formed when it last erupted in 1968. While we were up there, we saw the volcano erupt and could even hear it rumbling! These "eruptions" usually last for only about 10 seconds, but happen as often as 17 times a day.
That night we saw the red hot lava flow from the volcano. Arenal
Volcano doesn't have liquid lava flowing from it, it has lava rocks.
The lava rocks shoot out of the volcano a fiery red and as they bounce
down the side of the volcano they send off red sparks, so it's like
watching fireworks. We couldn't believe we were sitting at our hotel
watching all this so close up.
Another thing we did while we were in Arenal was go on a white water rafting trip. When we weren't going through the big rapids, we would look for wildlife along the river. We saw two sloths just hanging out in the trees (that's pretty much all they do). We got soaking wet and had a great time.
Our
last stop in Costa Rica was the Osa Peninsula, where we stayed with our
friend Greg's friend Andy. We were staying at the edge of the tropical
rainforest, where it met the beach. There was a lot of wildlife to see
there and on our first morning, we woke up to the news that they had
found an anteater hidden inside some tree roots digging up ants. This
was our first time seeing an anteater in the wild and it was really
cool.
While
we were in Osa we went on a hike with Andy who brought us to a 400 year
old strangler fig tree. There he attached us to a harness and we
climbed 60 feet up this huge tree. When we got to the top, we jumped
down and swung from a rope like Tarzan. We also learned how to rappel
down a rock wall. Once we were comfortable doing it, we got attached to
a harness again and scaled a 100' wall. It was really exciting to do
all these activities where we were flying through the air.

I've never been whit watter rafting. I bet it was awesome! I think it would be cool to see that volcano erupt!

Arenal volcano-the volcano looks sooooo cool wish I was there. By the way, were you guys scared when you heard the volcano rumble because from the books I’ve read about ancient volcano eruptions it sounds like most of the witnesses of volcanoes died because of the hot lava… so clue me in please because I have had the perception for many years that the lava in a volcano is really hot, therefore if it erupts while you are in the process of climbing it, you probably will have some injuries. Sooooo cool about the hike and your climb up that 100’ wall I seriously wish that I was there…no offense intended but I somewhat hate rafting in heavy currents mostly due to the fact that it is easy to get tipped over and just as easy to hit a rock or even fall down a water fall. Nice story about seeing the sloths I saw there picture and there nose/snout looks just like an anteaters…talking about anteaters they look really cool hidden in those roots.

Hey guys that is really cool you got to see a volcano. I was also lucky to see a volcano in Costa Rica. But clouds were ALL OVER IT! But it was still cool.
