An Aussie Merry Christmas

Hello, I'm in nature loving Tasmania. In Tasmania, we went to the towns of Strahan and Bicheno. Strahan was our first stop and there, we went on a boat cruise on the Gordon River and checked out Hentry Dunes. The dunes were huge and really steep to climb up, but sooooo much fun to run down.

In Bicheno we went to a small zoo. The first thing we saw was a bird that said hello to us. It was cool. Then, we went further into the zoo and we saw some kangaroos and one hopped right over to us.  Tyler and I fed it, but two big birds with green beaks got mad because we were feeding the kangaroos and not them, and the birds pecked at the kangaroo's butt. Take a look at the video:

The birds were so mean, but we chased them away so that we could keep feeding the kangaroos. The zoo had lots of other really cool stuff like wombats and venomous snakes. We learned the difference between venomous and poisonous. If it bites you then it's venomous, but if you eat it and then get sick, it's poisonous. We also saw some Tasmanian devils which are actually really cute. We saw the babies drink milk and the mommy's pouch.  I loved the Tassie devils.

On Christmas Eve, we made chocolate chip cookies and went to the beach. The tide pools at the beach were so awesome. There was lots of marine life in them, especially sea anemones and sea stars. That night we went on a penguin tour and saw these little blue fairy penguins. On the tour they showed us baby penguins that had brown feathers. We saw a male penguin sitting on an egg. Yes, the dad does it!  The mom and dad take turns sitting on the egg because they can't leave the egg alone when they're going out to catch food.

On Christmas Day, the first thing Tyler and I did was wake up our parents ... just like at home! We got great presents and after we played with them for a while, we had an Aussie "brekkie" (breakfast) and then went to church. After church we went on a hike to the viewing point for Wineglass Bay, which is a really pretty place in Freychinet National Park. We spent the rest of the day at the beach and then had a BBQ. We had a real Aussie Christmas!

While we were in Tasmania, we also went to Hobart. There was a big Sydney to Hobart yacht race going on and one night at dinner we met the skipper of the winning sailboat. The next day we went down to the harbor to see all the boats and when we were looking at the winning boat, the skipper recognized us and called us down. We got to go on the winning boat and that was really, really cool.

Here's a picture of Tyler and I with the skipper:
